Pioneer cabin

A view from within an actual late 1800's pioneer cabin. It was built of extra-heavy logs to protect its occupants against roving thugs. The settler could fire from this narrow window relatively protected from the bad guys. 

On the way to the top

A view on the way up to the summit of Renezvous Mountain on the aerial tram. Unfortunately this tram is being decommissioned in October, never to go again. Why? I don't know.

What does it look like at the top of the Tetons? Like this! June 5, 2006, 42 degrees, wind 10 MPH and still lots of snow. It's 76 degrees in the valley.

I made it!

Hikers

The three hikers sitting on the left have just hiked to the summit of Renezvous Mountain from the floor of Jackson Hole, a 4500 foot climb. The one on the left is American, the other two are Germans from Munich. They made the climb in two hours twenty minutes a distance of 7.2 miles.

I was taken by the lovely texture of these tulips with the morning sun shining through the blossoms. 

Red Wing Blackbird

The red wing blackbird is very skittish and it's hard to get close enough to photograph one. The yellow head version is less fearful and I have several good shots of them, but this is finally a good photo of the red wing.

I estimate this is about 1955. 

Yellow Jacket wasp on Yellow Flower

I think this wasp is confused and thinks that it's a honey bee. It was flying from flower to flower, apparently dining on polen, or maybe just attracted to the bright yellow flowers.

Little Robin Redbreast

The presence of robins in the area is confirmation that spring has arrived. Hurray! (Canon EOS 20D, 100-400mm Canon lens at 640mm equivalent.) 

Red flower buds

These are the buds of a flowering bush that is in back of my condo. The signs of Spring are everwhere and they are sure welcome. This has been a trying winter for me.

Best of Friends

Usually a mallard drake will be with a female, but these two stayed t ogether for the thirty minutes or so that I observed them. Maybe they're siblings, or maybe.....

Early Spring in Utah

Spring is finally near in Northern Utah. The ice has retreated from this small pond in the Kaysville Ponds Park, a small nature perserve on the edge of Kaysville, Utah. Busy Interstate I15 lies about 50 feet to the west (the right side of the photo).

There are already dozens of ducks and geese using the pond. A little later the pelicans will come.

The miracle of flight

This seagull was hovering over me as I was photographing other birds at the Kaysville Ponds Park March 11, 2006. I am fascinated by birds and their ability to fly without a machine wrapped around them. And where do they put their legs?
